Chocky is a science fiction novel by John Wyndham, first published in 1968 by Michael Joseph.[1]. The BBC produced a radio adaption by John Tydeman in 1967. In 1984 a children’s television drama based on the novel was shown on ITV in the UK. Many children have imaginary friends but one father becomes rather concerned that his son, Matthew, is a bit old to have one. His concerns deepen as his son becomes increasingly distressed and blames it on arguments with this unseen companion. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the friend is far from imaginary, but is an alien consciousness communicating with Matthew’s mind—a fact that is of intense interest to shadowy government forces.

Arthur C. Clarke’s Mysterious World is an acclaimed thirteen part British television series looking at unexplained phenomena from around the world. It was produced by Yorkshire Television for the ITV network and first broadcast in September 1980. Each program is introduced and book-ended by science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke in short sequences filmed in Sri Lanka. However, the bulk of the episodes are narrated by Gordon Honeycombe. The series was produced by John Fanshawe, John Fairley and directed by Peter Jones, Michael Weigall and Charles Flynn. It also featured a unique soundtrack composed by British artist Alan Hawkshaw.

This was for the third time in the history of Oscars that a science fiction box office hit lost to its modest competitor The Hurt Locker which won the Best Picture Oscar and whose Director Kathryn Bigelow became the only woman to have won the best directing Oscar. “The Hurt Locker” a gritty Iraq war movie has been the least-seen best-picture recipient in Oscar history — at least in theaters. The Hurt Locker which was just a modest box office competitor against James Cameron’s “Avatar, earned just $12.6 million worth of domestic earnings against the box office hit Avatar which tops the revenue charts by ringing in more than $700 million. Science fiction is a genre that has been rarely been awarded an Oscar in the past as much as in the present. They have a history of losing. Woody Allens small comic drama “Annie Hall” won best picture and director for 1977 over George Lucas’ “Star Wars,” which was then the biggest modern blockbuster.

In the classic 1950s science fiction/horror series Tales of Tomorrow, Burgess Meredith’s performance as an illiterate trapper stands out as most unusual. The episode is practically a silent movie, as mysterious render the whole country temporarily mute. So how can this man who can’t read or write persuade the authorities that the source of the Great Silence is an alien invader?
